Cold and flu symptoms are similar, but flu tends to be more severe. Here are some key differences:
- How Fast It Hits- A cold usually develops gradually over a few days, giving you a slow "run-down" feeling. The flu, however, strikes quickly and suddenly—often within just a few hours—making you feel very sick almost instantly
- Where You Feel It- A cold mostly affects your nose and throat with congestion or a cough. The flu is a whole-body experience, often bringing on intense muscle aches, high fevers, and deep exhaustion
- Your Level of Function- With a cold, you might feel under the weather, but you are usually OK to carry on with work or your daily routine. The flu makes you feel completely exhausted and too unwell to function, usually forcing you to stop everything and stay in bed.
