Bathing your baby should be a calm and enjoyable experience. Before you begin, keep these key safety guidelines in mind:
- Never leave your baby unattended. Never leave your baby alone in the bath, even for a single second. Always supervise them yourself, and do not rely on older siblings to watch them.
- Choose the right timing. Avoid bathing your baby straight after a feed, or when they are hungry or tired. Ensure the room is warm and comfortable before starting.
- Keep frequency flexible. You don't need to bathe your baby every day, but if they enjoy it, it's perfectly fine to make it a daily routine.
- Gather your supplies. Have a baby bath or clean basin filled with warm water, two towels, a clean nappy, clean clothes, and cotton wool within reach.
- Check the water temperature. The water should be warm, not hot. Always run the cold water first, then add the hot water. Mix it thoroughly to prevent hot patches, and test the temperature on your wrist or elbow.
- Choose mild products. Use plain water, or select a gentle liquid cleanser specifically formulated for babies.
Note: If your baby seems frightened of bathing and cries, try bathing together. Make sure the water isn't too hot. It's easier if someone else holds your baby while you get in and out of the bath.
