Self-esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves. When we have healthy self-esteem, we tend to feel positive about ourselves and about life in general. It makes us better able to deal with life's ups and downs.
When our self-esteem is low, we tend to see ourselves and our life in a more negative and critical light. We also feel less able to take on the challenges that life throws at us.
In a culture where being strong for everyone else is expected, it can be hard to admit when you are struggling. But low self-esteem does not mean you are failing. It means you are human and need a reset.
Here are some simple techniques that might help
Recognise what you're good at
We're all good at something, whether it's cooking, singing, doing puzzles or being a good friend. We also tend to enjoy doing the things we're good at, which can help boost your mood.
Build positive relationships
If certain people consistently bring you down, try to spend less time with them. Build relationships with people who are positive and who appreciate you for who you are not who they need you to be.
Be kind to yourself
Being kind to yourself means being gentle to yourself. Think what you would say to a close friend going through the same thing. We almost always give better advice to others than we give to ourselves. Today, try giving yourself the same grace.
Learn to be assertive
Being assertive is about respecting other people's opinions and needs and expecting the same respect in return. Watch people you admire who handle this well and pay attention to how they do it.
Start saying "no"
People with low self-esteem often feel they have to say yes to everyone even when they are already overwhelmed. Saying no does not damage relationships. It protects them. And it protects you.
Give yourself a challenge
Set yourself one small goal this week, something that stretches you slightly. Achieving it will remind you what you are capable of.
This weekend, pick one tip from this list and try it. Not all six, just one.
