The BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine helps protect against tuberculosis (TB). It's mainly given to babies and young children
TB mainly affects the lungs, but can affect other parts of the body. It can become very serious if not treated
You only need to have the BCG vaccine once. BCG vaccine is recommended to the following people:
- Newborn babies- usually be given it by the time they are 28 days old.
- Toddlers and children- born or lived in a country where there is a higher risk of getting TB or whose parents or grandparents were born in a country where TB is more common
- Health workers who work with people with TB
